XIX. yüzyılda Şam'da tasavvuf

Abstract

Bu çalışma, 19. yüzyılın başından Osmanlıların şehirden ayrılmasına kadar geçen sürede sûfîlerin Dımaşk'taki rolünü incelemektedir. Şehirde yayılan tarikatlar, bunların önde gelenleri, intisap eden önemli şahsiyetler, meclisleri, tekkeleri, merasimleri, âdetleri, kitapları, vazifeleri ve kurdukları müesseseler mümkün mertebe zikredilmiştir. Sûfilerin, devlet ricali, meslek erbabı, dinî azınlıklar, âlimler ve selefi ıslahatçılar gibi toplumun çeşitli kesimleriyle olan ilişkilerine yer verilmiş; siyasî, iktisadî, içtimaî, ilmî ve fikrî alanlardaki rolleri ve şehirde gerçekleşen büyük olaylardaki konumlarının genel bir resmi çizilmeye ve bu arada Dımaşk sûfiliğini İslam alemindeki diğer tasavvuf ekollerinden ayıran özellikler izah edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Araştırmada tasavvufun Dımaşk toplumunda gerilemesinin ve geçmiş yüzyıllarda kendisine biçilen rolü oynamaktan çekilmesinin ardındaki uzak ve yakın sebepleri ortaya çıkarmak için hiçbir çabadan kaçınılmamış; modernist, selefi, milliyetçi çevrelerin -aralarındaki anlaşmazlıklara rağmen- tarikatlara ve sûfîlik fikrine düşmanca tavır almalarının sebepleri açığa çıkarılmaya gayret edilmiştir. Tezde, -tasavvuf karşıtlarının iddia ettikleri gibi- sûfîliğin gerilemesinin 19. yüzyıl sonunda tasavvuf düşüncesinde artış gösteren hurafe ve bidatler şeklinde tek bir sebebe indirgenemeyeceği savunulmuş; İbrahim Paşa'nın Dımaşk'a gelmesi, Osmanlı Devleti'nin Batılılaşma ve modernleşmenin önünü açan Tanzimat dönemine girmesiyle birlikte başlayan, sûfîlerin toplumdaki konumlarını kaybetmesine yol açan, siyasî, iktisadî ve kültürel değişimlerin ortaya çıkardığı daha derin ve geniş çaplı bir dizi sebep ortaya konmuştur.

This study aims to examine the reality of Sufism and its role in Damascus from the beginning of the 19th century until the Ottoman withdrawal from the city. It focuses on documenting the Sufi paths that spread in the city, their prominent symbols, figures, councils, lodges, rituals, customs, crafts, occupations, and institutions. The study also explores the relationships between Sufis and various segments of society, including state officials, craftsmen, minorities, scholars, and Salafi reformists. It endeavors to depict their role in political, economic, social, scientific, and intellectual spheres of society, as well as their stance towards major events that took place in the city. Furthermore, the study attempts to highlight the distinctive features of Damascus Sufism that set it apart from other Sufi schools in the Islamic world. Finally, it makes a concerted effort to uncover the immediate and underlying reasons behind the decline of Sufism's role in Damascus society and its retreat from the responsibilities it once held in previous eras. The study also seeks to comprehend the reasons that led modernists, Salafis, and nationalists, despite their differences, to oppose Sufi paths and criticize Sufi thought. It refutes the notion that the decline of Sufism can be solely attributed to the superstitions and innovations that allegedly spread within Sufi thought in the late 19th century, as claimed by their adversaries. Instead, the study demonstrates that there were deeper and broader political, economic, and cultural factors that diminished the role of Sufism in society, starting with Ibrahim Pasha's entry into Damascus and later with the Ottoman state's era of organizations, which opened the door to Western influences and modernization.
