Examination of the relationship between school climate perceptions of students in different high schools and their attachment to school and academic success

Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship between students' perceptions of school climate, their attachment to school and their academic success in different types of secondary education institutions. For this purpose, the relational survey method, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group of the research consists of 394 high school students, 254 male and 140 female students studying in various secondary education institutions in Esenyurt district of Istanbul province with easy accessible sampling method. The "Personal Information Form", which consists of 3 separate parts, "School Climate Scale" and "School Attachment Scale for Children and Adolescents” were applied to students. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed in SPSS program in computer environment. In the research, correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed in order to determine the relationships between high school students' perceptions of school climate, their attachment to school and their academic success. According to the results of the research, a positive correlation was found between students' perceptions of school climate, their level of attachment to school and their academic success. In the study, it was concluded that school climate predicted school success and academic success, and school attachment predicted academic success at a low level. However, when school climate and school attachment are analyzed in the model, it is seen that the effect of school attachment variable on students' academic achievement is not significant. In this case, the school climate can be a variable including students' attachment to school and academic success

Bu araştırmada, farklı türdeki ortaöğretim kurumlarında bulunan öğrencilerin okul iklimi algıları ile okula bağlılıkları ve akademik başarıları arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda araştırmada nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden ilişkisel tarama yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu kolay ulaşılabilir örnekleme yöntemi ile İstanbul ili Esenyurt ilçesinde çeşitli ortaöğretim kurumlarında öğrenim gören 254 erkek 140 kız öğrenci olmak üzere toplam 394 lise öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Öğrencilere 3 ayrı bölümden oluşan “Kişisel Bilgi Formu”, Çocuk ve Ergenler için Okula Bağlanma Ölçeği” ve “Okul İklimi Ölçeği” uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen nicel veriler bilgisayar ortamında SPSS programında analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmada lise öğrencilerinin okul iklimi algıları, okula bağlılıkları ve akademik başarıları arasındaki ilişkilerin belirlenebilmesi amacıyla korelasyon analizi ile basit ve çoklu regresyon analizi yapılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre öğrencilerinin okul iklimi algıları, okula bağlılık düzeyleri ve akademik başarıları arasında olumlu yönde ilişki saptanmıştır. Araştırmada okul ikliminin okula bağlanmayı ve akademik başarıyı, okula bağlanmanın da akademik başarıyı düşük düzeyde olumlu yönde yordadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ancak okul iklimi ile okula bağlanma birlikte modelde analiz edildiğinde, okula bağlanma değişkeni öğrencilerin akademik başarıları üzerindeki etkisinin anlamlı olmadığı görülmektedir. Bu durumda okul iklimi, öğrencilerin okula bağlılıklarını ve akademik başarını da kapsayan bir değişken olabilir.
