16. yüzyıl İngiltere-Osmanlı ilişkileri ve Safiye Valide Sultan ile Kraliçe I. Elizabeth'in mektuplaşmaları

Abstract

Osmanlı'nın Valide Sultanlarının hayatları gerek batı dünyasında gerekse kendi tarihimizde her zaman dikkat çekici bir konu olmuştur. Ancak söz konusu ilgi batı dünyasında her zaman için oryantalist bir düşünce açısından ele alınmıştır. Osmanlı'da ise kimi zaman el üzerinde tutulan kimi zamanda suçlanan bakış açısı ile değerlendirilmişlerdir. Devletin tarihinde ilk olarak Kanuni Sultan Süleyman'ın annesi Hatice Hafsa Hatun'a Sultan unvanını vermesiyle Osmanlı tarihinde ilk defa bir kadın, padişaha denk bir güce sahip olmuştur. Daha sonra gelen ardılı Hürrem Sultan, oğlu II. Selim'in tahta çıkışını görememiştir. Ancak hayatı boyunca Sultan Süleyman'ın tek kadını olarak büyük bir güce kavuşan Hürrem Sultan, kendisinden sonra gelen Nurbanu Sultan ve Safiye Sultan'ın egemenlik yolunu hazırladı da diyebiliriz. Safiye Sultan ve Elizabeth Tudor arasındaki mektuplaşmalar bazı eserler içerisindeki satır aralarında kendisine yer bulmuş olsa da özellikle yerel kaynaklarda tam bir analiz ve çözümlemeden mahrum kalmıştır. Tezin konusu söz konusu eksikliği gidermek amacıyla seçilmiştir. I. Elizabeth'in gönderdiği mektuplar günümüze ulaşmamış olsa da Safiye Sultan tarafından İngiltere kraliçesine gönderilen mektuplardan son derece önemli bilgiler ediniyoruz. Bunun yanı sıra çalışmada ayrı bir bölüm olarak I. Elizabeth'in, III. Murat'a gönderdiği mektuplar ve iki ülke arasında başlayan siyasi ilişkiler de ele alındı.

The lives of the Ottoman Valide Sultans have always been a remarkable subject both in the western world and in our own history. However, the aforementioned interest has always been dealt with from an orientalist point of view in the western world. In the Ottoman Empire, they were evaluated from the point of view, which is sometimes cherished and sometimes accused. For the first time in the history of the state, when Suleiman the Magnificent's mother, Hatice Hafsa Hatun, was given the title of Sultan, for the first time in Ottoman history, a woman had a power equivalent to the sultan. His successor Hürrem Sultan, who came later, could not see his son Selim II ascending the throne. However, we can say that Hürrem Sultan, who gained great power as the only woman of Sultan Süleyman throughout her life, prepared the way for the sovereignty of Nurbanu Sultan and Safiye Sultan, who came after her. Although the correspondence between Safiye Sultan and Elizabeth Tudor found its place between the lines in some works, it was deprived of analysis, especially in local sources. The subject of the thesis was chosen in order to make up for the said deficiency. Although the letters sent by Elizabeth I have not survived, we obtain extremely important information from the letters sent by Safiye Sultan to the Queen of England. In addition, the letters sent by Elizabeth I to Murat III and the political relations between the two countries were also discussed as a separate section in the study.
