An analysis of the motivational levels of the students in the preparatory schools of state and foundation universities in Turkey in terms of type of university, gender, age and type of faculty

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye'deki devlet ve özel üniversitelerin hazırlık okullarındaki öğrencilerin motivasyon seviyelerinin üniversite türü, cinsiyet, yaş ve fakülte türü açısından incelenmesidir. Çalışmada, nicel araştırma modellerinden betimleyici araştırma deseni kullanılmıştır. Evren ve örneklem seçimi için, kolaylıkla bulunanı örnekleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın katılımcıları, Türkiye'de bulunan 3 farklı devlet üniversitesinin ve 3 farklı vakıf üniversitesinin hazırlık okullarından seçilmiştir. Çalışmada yer alan katılımcı sayısı 189'dur. Verilerin toplanması için, daha önceden Gardner'ın (1985) Davranış ve Motivasyon Testi (AMTB) ve Liu'nun (2005) dil öğrenme motivasyonu anketini uyarlayan ve ölçeğin orijinalini hazırlayan Degang'dan (2010) uyarlanan bir yabancı dil öğrenme motivasyon ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Anket iki bölümden oluşmaktadır. İlk bölüm katılımcıların demografik özellikleri için kullanılmıştır. 20 maddeli bir ölçeği içeren ikinci bölüm ise öğrencilerin motivasyon seviyelerinin incelenebilmesini sağlamıştır. Öğrencilerin motivasyon seviyeleri, üniversite türü, cinsiyet, yaş ve fakülte türü gibi değişkenler açısından incelenmiş ve yorumlanmıştır. Çalışmanın bulguları, araçsal ve bütünsel motivasyonların alt boyutlarında bazı değişkenler açısından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklar olduğunu göstermiştir. Diğer taraftan, bazı değişkenler öğrencilerin motivasyonları üzerinde anlamlı herhangi bir fark yaratmamıştır. Ayrıca, devlet ve vakıf üniversitelerin hazırlık okullarındaki öğrencilerin motivasyon seviyelerinin birbirinden farklı olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.The aim of this study is to analyse the motivational levels of the students in the preparatory schools of state and foundation universities in Turkey in terms of type of university, gender, age and type of faculty. In the study, descriptive research design of quantitative research models was used. For the selection of population and samples, convenience sampling method was used. The participants of the study were selected from the preparatory schools of 3 different state universities 3 different foundation universities in Turkey. The number of participants was 189 in the study. In order to collect data, a foreign language learning motivation questionnaire, which was adapted from Degang (2010) who had prepared the original version of the questionnaire by adapting Gardner's (1985) Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) and Liu's (2005) language learning motivation questionnaire, was used. The questionnaire consisted of two parts. The first part was used for the demographic information of the participants. The second part, which included a scale with 20 items, provided the data for analysing motivational levels of the students. The motivational levels of the students were analysed and interpreted in terms of variables such as, type of university, age and type of faculty. The findings of the study demonstrated that there were statistically significant differences between instrumental and integrative subscales in terms of some variables. On the other hand, some variables did not make any significant difference on the motivational levels of the students. It was also revealed that the motivation levels of the students in the preparatory schools of both state and foundation universities differed from each other.
