Nanoliposomes are among the most commonly investigated colloidal delivery systems in food and nutraceuticals research. Since they have the capacity to encapsulate and deliver both hydrophilic and hydrophobic bioactives, nanoliposomes have been utilized in a number of studies and industrial products. In this review, some of the most recent advances in the preparation of active material bearing nanoliposomes are summarized with a special emphasis on new manufacture methodologies, stability during storage, and upon digestion, determination, and monitoring of encapsulation efficiency, enhancement of anticarcinogenic, and antimicrobial activities of encapsulated compounds, and the possibilities of incorporation in food systems. Due to the versatility, bioactivity, nonimmunogenicity, and nontoxicity of bioactive bearing nanoliposomes, we anticipate that their utilization in foods and nutraceuticals has strong potential, especially along with the developments in continuous modes of liposome production, increasing commercial availability of inexpensive sources of phospholipids and easy-to-prepare liposomal dispersions, such as proliposomes.
