Türkiye'de çağdaş siyaset düşüncesinde içselleştirilen oryantalist söylem: Abdullah Cevdet örneği

Abstract

Çağdaş Türk siyaset düşüncesi, Osmanlı Devleti'nde ıslahat/modernleşme girişimlerinin başladığı 18. yüzyılın son çeyreğinden 1924 tarihine, oradan da günümüze gelinceye kadar din, tarih, siyaset, hukuk, edebiyat, sosyal hayat vb. gibi alanlarındaki ortaya konmuş fikri çabaların, arayışların, tartışmaların ve gayretlerin tümüdür şeklinde özetlenebilir. İncelediğimiz konu içeriği itibariyle geniş bir bilimsel alan ile ilişki içindedir. Özellikle Osmanlı Devleti'nin son dönemi ile Cumhuriyet Türkiye'sinde Batılı anlamda ortaya çıkan yeni uygulamaları içine almaktadır. 19. ve 20. yüzyıl Batılılaşma yönünde yapılan ıslahat hareketleri hakkında pek çok literatür olmasına rağmen, modernleşme uygulamalarıyla birlikte yaygınlaşan, Batı'nın Doğu hakkında değer yargıları ürettiği oryantalist söylemin incelenmesi ülkemizde gereği kadar yapılmamıştır. Bu tez, Abdullah Cevdet'in düşüncesine sirayet etmiş olan oryantalist varsayımları ve inançları gün yüzüne çıkarmayı ve onun metodolojik sorunlarını araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır.

Contemporary Turkish political thought can be briefly summarized as follows. It originated in the Ottoman reformation and political modernization in the last quarter of the 18th century, reached its zenith at the creation of the Republic in 1924 and endured until today as a set of intellectual efforts, heated debates and differing ideas on religion, history, politics, law, literature, social life etc. This thesis focuses on the practices of modernization in these wide-ranging fields of research that developed during the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the early years of the Republic of Turkey. There is an abundance of research on the Western-style Ottoman and Turkish modernization and reforms during the 19th and 20th centuries. However, the dissemination of the orientalist discourse in the modern Turkish political thought, amplified by the modernization practices, has not received the academic interest it deserves. Therefore, this thesis aims to unearth and explore the orientalist assumptions and beliefs, as well as the methodological problems, that have influenced and determined the political thought of Abdullah Cevdet.
