Effects of focused written corrective feedback on essay writing skills: A case study of university preparatory school students in Istanbul

Abstract

This research study aims to determine the effects of focused written corrective feedback on the essay writing skills of university preparatory schools in Istanbul, Türkiye. For this purpose, the study was conducted with 74 A2-B1-level students at a preparatory school in Istanbul at a private and public university. The study entails a mixed method. As a data collecting instrument, SPSS 29 was employed to collect data from the experimental and control groups before and after the treatment phase. Next, a Paired Samples T-Test was utilized for the data analysis procedure. According to inferential statistics, the T value is -8.818, which indicates that the post-test is greater than the pre-test. We can also see that the mean value, which is -6296 is statistically significantly different from zero, specifying that the post-test was effective. The findings reveal that focused written corrective feedback significantly affects the participants' essay writing skills. This study discovered that focused written corrective feedback on essays written by university preparatory schools has a positive effect on their performance. In other words, receiving focused written feedback on essays may positively influence the university preparatory school students' writing, since the students outperformed in the post-test compared to the pre-test. As a result, the outcomes of this investigation promote the implementation of focused written corrective feedback on essays in the university preparatory schools.

Bu araştırma çalışmasının amacı, İstanbul'daki üniversite hazırlık okullarında odaklanmış yazılı düzeltici geri bildirimin (focused written corrective feedback) öğrencilerin kompozisyon yazma becerileri üzerindeki etkilerini ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda çalışma, İstanbul'da bir devlet ve bir vakıf üniversitesinin hazırlık okulunda öğrenim gören A2-B1 seviyesindeki 74 öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma karma yöntem yaklaşımını içermektedir. Veri toplama aracı olarak, deney ve kontrol gruplarından, uygulama öncesi ve sonrası veriler elde etmek amacıyla SPSS 29 programı kullanılmıştır. Çıkarımsal istatistiklere göre T değeri -8.818 olarak bulunmuş, bu da son testin ön testten daha yüksek olduğunu göstermektedir. Ortalama fark değeri olan -6.296 da sıfırdan istatistiksel olarak anlamlı şekilde farklıdır ve bu durum son testin etkili olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bulgular, odaklanmış yazılı düzeltici geri bildirimin katılımcıların kompozisyon yazma becerileri üzerinde anlamlı bir etkiye sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu çalışma, üniversite hazırlık okullarında yazılan kompozisyonlara verilen odaklanmış yazılı geri bildirimin öğrencilerin performansı üzerinde olumlu bir etkisi olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Başka bir deyişle, kompozisyonlara odaklanmış yazılı geri bildirim alan üniversite hazırlık öğrencileri, ön test sonuçlarına kıyasla son testte daha başarılı olmuştur. Sonuç olarak, bu araştırmanın bulguları üniversite hazırlık okullarında kompozisyon yazımında odaklanmış yazılı düzeltici geri bildirimin uygulanmasını desteklemektedir.
