Burhan Cahit Morkaya’nın Coşkun Gönül romanında mekân olarak Büyükada

Abstract

İstanbul Adaları edebiyatçıların şehrin karmaşası ve gürültüsünden uzaklaşıp sakinlik buldukları bir mekân olması, bazı edebiyatçıların Adalar’a yerleşmesi veya yılın belli dönemlerini burada geçirmeleri yönleriyle ikamet veya ziyaret edilen bir yer olmuştur. Adalar, tabiatı, sosyal hayatı, aşk hikâyelerine zemin teşkil edecek bir dünya olması gibi yönleriyle edebî eserlere de konu olur. Eserlerinde Adalar’a sıkça yer vermelerinden ötürü edebiyat tarihinde “ada şairi” olarak anılan Mehmet Celal ve Tahsin Nahit gibi isimler de bulunmaktadır. Döneminin popüler yazarlarından biri olarak nitelenen Burhan Cahit Morkaya, eserlerinde İstanbul Adaları’ndan biri olan Büyükada’ya yer veren bir diğer yazardır. Yazarın ilk romanlarından biri olan Coşkun Gönül’de bir mekân olarak Büyükada’nın geniş yer kapladığı görülür. Romanda Birinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarında İstanbul’da yaşayan üç genç kızın hikâyesi konu edilir. Olay örgüsü Serap, Serap’ın çocukluk arkadaşı Asuman ve Serap’ın mektepten arkadaşı Vildan etrafında gelişir. Burhan Cahit, bu üç genç kızın başından geçen aşk hikâyelerini dönemin sosyal ve kültürel şartlarını da aksettirecek bir şekilde sunmaktadır. Romanda olaylar Kadıköy, Şişli, Beyoğlu gibi semtler başta olmak üzere İstanbul’da geçer. Vildan’ın Büyükada’da oturan zengin bir ailenin tek kızı olması münasebetiyle Büyükada, sokakları, caddeleri, otelleri ve mesire yerleriyle romanda büyük yer kaplar. Makalede Büyükada’nın hangi unsurlarıyla romanda yer aldığı incelenecek, bu mekânların kurgu içindeki işlevleri değerlendirilecektir. Söz konusu mekânların gerçeklikle ilgisi ise araştırmanın bir diğer boyutunu oluşturmaktadır.

Istanbul Islands have been a place of residence or visit, as it is a place where writers of letters get away from the chaos and noise of the city and find calm; some writers settle on the Islands or spend certain periods of the year here. The Islands have also been the subject of literary works with their nature, social life and a world that will serve as a basis for love stories. There are names such as Mehmet Celal and Tahsin Nahit, who are known as the “island poets” in the history of literature because they frequently include the island in their works. Described as one of the famous writers of his period, Burhan Cahit Morkaya is another writer who includes Buyukada, one of the Istanbul Islands, in his works. In Coskun Gonul, one of the first novels of the author, it is seen that Buyukada occupies an ample space as a place. The story of three young girls living in Istanbul during the First World War is the subject of the novel. The plot develops around Serap, Serap’s childhood friend Asuman and Serap’s school friend Vildan. Burhan Cahit presents the love stories of these three young girls in a way that reflects the social and cultural conditions of the period. The events in the novel take place in Istanbul, especially in districts such as Kadıkoy, Sisli and Beyoglu. Since Vildan is the only daughter of a wealthy family living in Buyukada, Buyukada occupies a prominent place in the novel with its streets, avenues, hotels, and recreation areas. While war troubles and economic difficulties manifest themselves throughout the country and in the center of Istanbul, it is seen that Buyukada hosts an active social life. Buyukada is a world where poker and backgammon parties are organized by groups of friends, and tea meetings are held. Mansions, casinos, clubs, and hotels are the leading entertainment venues where people come together. Mr. Malik’s magnificent white mansion in Nizam, Mr. Sacit’s mansion with a large garden, Yacht Club, Splendid Hotel, etc. places such as these, are among the prominent positions in the novel. Buyukada is depicted as a world of entertainment free from the troubles of the war period. While the soldiers go to war at the front, the inhabitants of Buyukada are busy with the pleasures of the glittering world they live in. Another prominent aspect of Buyukada, a world where love lives, is that it is a meeting place for lovers. The richness of nature has turned Buyukada into an open-air place. The depictions of nature made through the eyes of the heroes, on the other hand, are reflected as the result of space-human relations. It is possible to find traces of the hero’s psychology in the space, especially in the depictions conveyed by Vildan.In this article, the elements of the Buyukada in the novel will be examined and the functions of these places in the fiction will be evaluated. The relevance of these spaces to reality constitutes another dimension of the research.
