Turkish EFL university instructors' perceptions toward ELF-oriented pedagogy

Abstract

The growing interest in English as a lingua franca (ELF) has brought about a new scope of empirical research into the inclusion of ELF into ELT practices. This study intended to explore the perceptions of EFL university instructors in Turkey on different aspects of ELF-oriented pedagogy. In addition, the study pursued to investigate whether the two factors of teaching experience and background degrees have a potential effect on these attitudes. To achieve the aims of the study, data were collected by employing an online survey of a questionnaire adopted from Bayyurt et al. (2019) and open-ended questions. The study sampled 50 instructors in three universities with ELF settings. Descriptive and inferential statistics via SPSS were utilized to analyze the quantitative data and content analysis for the qualitative data. The results of the study indicated that the instructors were theoretically aware of different aspects of ELF, yet they were in a quandary as to how they can practically apply their ELF awareness in ELT practices. The findings also revealed the participants' belief in the supremacy of Standard English (SE) norms. Moreover, it was also found out that the effect teaching experience has on EFL university instructors varies depending on the different aspects of ELF. In a sense, less experienced instructors more ELF-aware in relation to native varieties and native speakers. Finally, the findings showed that there are no significant differences between the participants' perceptions toward ELF with regard to different background degrees.

Bu çalışma Türkiye'deki EFL üniversite öğretim üyelerinin ODİ odaklı pedagojinin farklı yönlerine ilişkin algılarını ve öğretmenlik deneyimi ve arka plan derecelerinin iki faktörünün bu tutumlar üzerinde potansiyel bir etkisi olup olmadığını araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın hedeflerini gerçekleştirmek için açık uçlu sorular ve Bayyurt ve diğerleri tarafından uyarlanan anketini içeren çevrimiçi anket çalışmasıyla nitel ve nicel veri toplanmıştır. Çalışma ODİ ortamlarına sahip üç üniversitesindeki 50 öğretim elemanını örneklemiştir. Nicel verilerin analizinde SPSS'deki tanımlayıcı ve çıkarımsal istatistiklerden, nitel veriler için içerik analizinden yararlanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları, öğretim üyelerinin teorik olarak ODİ'nin farklı yönlerinin farkında olduklarını, ancak ELT'de ODİ farkındalıklarını pratikte nasıl uygulayabilecekleri konusunda bir ikilem içinde olduklarını göstermiştir. Bulgular ayrıca katılımcıların Standart İngilizce (Sİ) normlarının üstünlüğüne olan inançlarını da ortaya çıkarmıştır. Ayrıca, daha az deneyimli eğitmenler, ELT uygulamasında ODİ'nin uygulanmasına karşı daha olumlu bir tutum sergilediler. Son olarak, bulgular farklı geçmiş derecelerine göre katılımcıların ODİ'ye yönelik algıları arasında önemli bir fark olmadığını göstermiştir.
