Modern mimarlık meselelerine romantik bakışlar: Turgut Cansever

Abstract

Bu çalışma Cumhuriyet Döneminin önemli bir mimarı ve düşünürü olan Turgut Cansever’in 1960 senesinde hazırlamış olduğu ‘Modern Mimarinin Temel Meseleleri’ başlıklı doçentlik tezi bağlamında karşılaştırmalı bir okuma gerçekleştirmektedir. Cansever’in tezde ele aldığı Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Alvar Aalto ve Mies van der Rohe gibi çağdaş mimarlığın öncü aktörlerini mimari üretimleri üzerinden nasıl değerlendirdiği, bunu yaparken hangi kaynak ve referanslardan beslendiği incelenecektir. Bu bağlamda hem tezde yer alan mimarların üretimleri hem de Turgut Cansever’in mimari üretimi, karşılaştırmalı bir şekilde ele alınmaktadır. Bu sayede Cansever’in teorik düşüncesi ile pratik üretimi arasındaki uyum irdelenmektedir. Cansever’in mimarlık terminolojisinin omurgasının oluşmasına dolaylı ve/veya dolaysız katkı sağlayan Viyana Okulu, Klasik İslam Metinleri ve 19. yüzyıl Romantik Söylemi’nin kurumları, kişileri ve mefhumlarının Cansever düşüncesi üzerindeki etkileri çalışma boyunca ele alınmaktadır. Bu kavramsal omurga (tektonik/atektonik, ferdiyetin yüceliği, ferdiyet/bireysellik, cemaat/cemiyet, materyal/immateryal, malzemenin tabiliği, maddenin dürüstlüğü, sonsuz mekân, tabiata açılma vb.) çerçevesinde makale boyunca Turgut Cansever mimari üretimi incelenmektedir.

This study focuses on the associate professorship dissertation titled ‘Basic Issues of Modern Architecture’ prepared in 1960 by Turgut Cansever, an important Turkish architect and thinker of the Republican Era. The study aims to examine the relations among Cansever architecture and discourse, architectural productions, and discourses of romantic and Modern Architectural movements. The attention was paid on how Cansever evaluated the the leading architects of the Modern Architecture, in particular Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Alvar Aalto, and Mies van der Rohe in terms of their architectural production and what sources and references he used to do this. In this context, comparison between both have been conducted, the productions of the architects included in the thesis and the architectural production of Turgut Cansever. In this way, the harmony between Cansever's theoretical thought and practical production is examined. The effects of the institutions, people, and ideas of the Vienna School, Classical Islamic Texts, and 19th Century Romantic Discourse on Cansever's thought, which directly and/or indirectly contribute to the formation of the structure of Cansever architectural terminology, are discussed throughout the study. Within such theoric framework (tectonics / atektonic - dignity of individuality - individuality -community / society, material / immaterial - naturalness of material - honesty of matter, infinite space - opening to nature, etc.), Cansever`s work was examined throughout the article.
