Özet
This study provides the first comprehensive application of Georg Lukács's Marxist literary theory to John Galsworthy's Forsyte Chronicles, examining the formation of class consciousness through the "sense of property" across three generations of upper-middle class Forsyte family at the turn of the century London. This theoretical approach represents qa significant departure from existing Galsworthy scholarship, employing Lukács's concepts of "class consciousness," "historical totality," "typicality," "reification," and "false consciousness" to analyse the function of the sense of property as a determining force on economic, moral, social, and emotional levels in the formation of class identity within the Forsyte family. The research reveals that while property consciousness transforms over three generations, paralleling the changing phases of capitalism, it emphasises that this consciousness changes only in appearance, not in essence. Through the Soames and Irene relationship, the study demonstrates how the sense of property degrades interpersonal relationships into commodified exchanges, while revealing that bourgeois consciousness, which reifies others, is itself reified by rigid class norms. The study also examines the effects of historical events such as the Boer War and the First World War on the transformation of class consciousness and explores class conflict's ideological, economic, and political manifestations through the Forsyte family. Thus, this analysis repositions Galsworthy's Forsyte Chronicles as both family saga and historical critique of capitalist development.
