Cumhuriyetin ikinci on yılında Ayasofya'nın müzeye çevrilmesine yönelik olarak alınan karar gereği Ayasofya, camiden müzeye dönüştürülmüştür.
Hagia Sophia, which was destroyed twice during the Byzantine period, built for the third time by Justinian in the VI century, and became a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul, has witnessed many important events in the historical process. Hagia Sophia, which adorns one of the seven hills of Istanbul, was seen as the symbol of the conquest and the apple of the eye during the period of the Ottoman Empire, and was turned into an Islamic temple with its minarets, mihrab, minbar, library, sanbyan school and fountain. In the second decade of the Republic, Hagia Sophia was converted from a mosque to a museum in accordance with the decision taken to turn Hagia Sophia into a museum. This study aims to examine the events that took place during the conversion of Hagia Sophia from a mosque to a museum, the practices against the Islamic artworks found here, and the stages of its transformation from a museum to a mosque again, based on archival sources and media outlets. There have been debates about whether or not Mustafa Kemal's signature was on the Council of Ministers Decree on the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a museum. It was observed that various political events were influential in the conversion of the mosque into a museum. The elimination of this temple's characteristic of being a place of worship interrupted the transfer of Hagia Sophia to the next centuries. The use of wrong materials in the repairs damaged the nature of Hagia Sophia. Since the archive, library and mausoleums of Hagia Sophia were not given due attention during the museum period, historical artifacts have been damaged. This research aims to analyze the last 100 years of Hagia Sophia politically, culturally and physically.
