Corci Zeydan'ın İstanbul'a Seyahat isimli eserinde mimari ve sosyal hayat

Abstract

Bu çalışma; Batı'nın misyonerlik öğretileri çerçevesinde Arap bir oryantalist olarak yetişen Corci Zeydan'ın "İstanbul'a Seyahat" adlı seyahatnamesinden yola çıkarak hazırlanmıştır. Çalışmamızda, bu eseri seçmemizin en temel nedeni Corci Zeydan'ın yetiştiği ortam ve mensup olduğu milli alt yapılarla birlikte II. Abdülhamid karşıtı olup İttihat ve Terakki yanlısı sergilediği tutumu olmuştur. Bu sebeple çalışmanın amacı Corci Zeydan'ın gözlemlerine dayanarak 1909 yılının İstanbul'unu oryantalist ve Batılı diğer ecnebi seyyahların gözlemleri ile karşılaştırmak ve 20. yy. başlarına girerken İstanbul'daki halkların sosyal-kültürel hayatını arşiv belgeleri ile ortaya çıkarmak ve Corci Zeydan'ın gözlemlerini delillendirmektir. Bu maksat doğrultusunda çalışmamız İstanbul'un mimari eserleri ve sosyal hayatı ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman incelemesi tekniği ile birlikte konunun etraflıca ortaya konulabilmesi adına arşiv belgeleri, dönem kronikleri, yabancı seyahatnameler, dönem fotoğrafları ve çağdaş araştırmacıların çalışmaları kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda diğer seyyahlar ile karşılaştırıldığında ve arşiv belgeleri ile desteklendiğinde Corci Zeydan'ın gözlemlerinin o dönem İstanbul'unu doğru bir şekilde yansıttığı görülmüştür. Bununla birlikte birincil kaynaklar incelendiğinde Corci Zeydan'ın yukarıda zikrettiğimiz kişisel birikimleriyle iddia ettiği bazı gözlemlerinde objektif olmadığı ortaya çıkmıştır. Araştırmanın nihayetinde II. Meşrutiyet döneminin başlangıcı olan 1909 yılı İstanbul'u ve bu dönemin getirdiği sosyal değişimler seyyahların gözlemleri, arşiv belgeleri ile ortaya çıkarılmış, çalışma sonlandırılmıştır.

This study is based on the travelogue "İstanbul'a Seyahat" by Corci Zeydan, who grew up as an Arab Orientalist within the framework of the missionary teachings of the West. In our study, the main reason for choosing this work is the environment in which Corci Zeydan grew up and the national backgrounds to which he belonged, as well as his stance against Abdul Hamid II and in favour of the Committee of Union and Progress. For this reason, the aim of the study is to compare the Istanbul of 1909 with the observations of Orientalists and other foreign Western travellers based on Corci Zeydan's observations; and to reveal the social and cultural life of people in Istanbul at the beginning of the 20th century through archival documents and to prove Corci Zeydan's observations. For this purpose, our study is limited to the architectural monuments and social life of Istanbul. In the study, the technique of document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used and it relied on archival documents, contemporary chronicles, foreign travelogues, contemporary photographs and the works of contemporary researchers to reveal the subject in detail. At the end of the study, Corci Zeydan's observations, when compared with other travellers and supported by archival documents, were found to be an accurate reflection of Istanbul at the time. However, when the primary sources were analysed, it was found that Corci Zeydan was not objective in some of his observations, which he claimed were based on his personal experiences mentioned above. At the end of the study, the Istanbul of 1909, the beginning of the Constitutional Monarchy II period, and the social changes brought about by this period were revealed through the observations of travellers and archival documents, and the study was concluded.
